PASSION prevails, and so does Iris
Carlos-Blas Galindo
Many are the reactions that Iris elicits with the works that form part of her Passion series. These include reactions of curiosity, amazement, a strong impact, attraction, surprise (pleasurable in many cases), shivering, and even rejection. The truth is that she knows she needs high doses of expressiveness to capture and maintain the attention of her audience. And she demonstrates this once again in this exhibition, which is part of a larger project she has been working on for the past few years.
Indeed, it is through the expressive resources present in her paintings and installations that some people are seduced by them, others experience wonder, and still others feel attacked—even though most of us feel addressed. This artist is aware that eloquence is the key to sensitivity, and that those who manage to shake such human capacity have the potential to later reach the minds of the viewers—something that matters greatly to her.
Her expressive goals, and the desire to provoke intellectual responses, lead Iris to employ typification, sentimentality, sensuality, pleasure, drama, cheesiness (a task that is by no means easy), and beauty (a risky category) in combinations that are as intertwined as they are effective. She knows well that by using these resources, she broadens her possibilities of approaching the thematic lines that interest her to those who appreciate her work. Among this vast array of content, the following issues stand out for their intensity and recurrence: the social roles of women and men in Western culture, the many rights that need to be fully exercised, numerous vertices—and vortices—of identity, sexuality, erotism, pornography, the social role of artists, their stance on power, chance, the complementary duality between the intimate and the public, the various meanings of the concept of love, the similarities and differences between individual and collective behaviors, written communication (especially epistolary) and visual communication... all of these aspects are of interest to very few artists. And very few female artists, paradoxically.
It is valuable that Iris approaches her themes with bold, provocative, persuasive, playful methods—always free from coercive modesty. It is also plausible that her works reveal rebellious, progressive attitudes full of vitality. As is known, it is not a condition for true art that the daily positions of the creators align with their artistic statements. But in Iris's case, they do align and are favorable to the results of her work. However, a sine qua non condition for true art is the cultural and specifically artistic contribution that each artist is capable of making. Iris's works in Mexico constitute a contribution within the context of global erotic art, as they not only revisit the recurrent representation of sexual organs (iconography in which phallic symbolism appears more frequently than others), but are also pioneering feminine artworks, created by a trailblazer from whom many hope to see a new female condition emerge: a liberating condition.
I write these lines while she paints. Watching her work with determination, I see that she is rebellious, progressive, and full of vitality. The atmosphere is cold during this early Oaxaca morning. But she seems not to notice it. Or she seems unaffected by the temperature. She adheres commercial images to her canvases. She adds references to mass culture. She pays close attention to the texts she incorporates into her paintings. She carefully considers the handwriting she uses. She takes care to give these writings the visual weight she deems most appropriate. She chooses the objects she will add to her paintings. Reflects on their placement. Decides. Reconsiders. Continues. Reworks her paintings until she considers them satisfactory.
But what is most surprising about her current trajectory as a visual artist is how uncommon her stylistic affiliation is. This is because she explores a direction that, while still post-avant-garde, is atypical due to its high levels of originality—a originality that many post-avant-garde artists have abandoned. In some cases, she works appropriations of works that, as she advances in the process of painting them, cease to be alien to her and at the same time stop referring to the works she started from. And of great importance is that, while she creates installations, her painting is conceptual, emphasizing the importance of the ideas she transmits. However, her painting does not fall into traditional conceptualism, as she does not dismiss the relevance of craftsmanship. When faced with her works, one can respond in countless ways; however, it is impossible to be indifferent to them. Because in this exhibition of hers, Passion prevails. As much as Iris herself prevails.
PASSION prevalece, e Iris también
Carlos-Blas Galindo
